The Story of the Treasure Seekers

E. Nesbit · 1899 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Their mother is dead, their father's partner has ruined him, and the six Bastable children set out to restore the fortunes of the house by every method a child can think of: digging in the back garden, turning detective, rescuing a stranger, going into the sherry trade. One of them is writing the account and swears he will not say which, though he cannot help recording how well Oswald behaves throughout. Nesbit's first children's book invented a comic voice that English writing has been borrowing ever since.
