The Enchanted Castle
Three children kept at school through the summer holidays follow a maze to a sleeping girl in white who claims to be a hundred-year-old princess, turns out to be the housekeeper's niece, and has a ring that really does make the wearer invisible. Needing an audience for a play, they build people out of overcoats, hockey sticks and painted paper faces, and the things stand up and applaud. The garden statues climb down from their pedestals at moonrise, and Nesbit lets the comedy turn frightening without warning.
