The Phoenix and the Carpet

E. Nesbit · 1904 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A firework let off indoors burns through the nursery carpet, and the second-hand one bought to replace it arrives with an egg rolled up inside that hatches into a vain and elaborately courteous phoenix. The carpet goes wherever it is told, which is how the children acquire a tower in France, a hundred and ninety-nine Persian cats, a cook who is made queen of a Pacific island, and a burglar they cannot get rid of. The phoenix, meanwhile, finds a London office that has taken its name and expects to be worshipped there.
