Five Children and It

E. Nesbit · 1902 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

Cyril, Anthea, Robert and Jane, moved out of London to a house in Kent, dig in a gravel pit and turn up a Psammead, a sand-fairy with snail's eyes and a foul temper who grants one wish a day and lets it expire at sunset. They ask to be beautiful, to be rich, to have wings, and every wish arrives with a defect nobody thought to rule out. Nesbit's method of letting magic loose on ordinary children set the pattern for English fantasy after her.
