The Tale of Heungbu

Anonymous · c. 1750 CE · Folktale · Korean · Enlightenment

Two brothers divide their father's estate and the elder keeps every part of it, leaving the younger to beg for a house full of children. When a swallow nesting under the poor brother's eaves breaks a leg he splints it with cloth, and the bird comes back in spring with a gourd seed; the elder, hearing what grew out of it, goes looking for a swallow of his own to injure. One of the five surviving pansori, and the plainest thing Korean tradition says about greed.
