Wealth

Aristophanes · 388 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

An honest farmer follows a filthy blind old man home on the strength of an oracle and finds he has been handed the god of wealth in person, blinded by Zeus so that he cannot tell the decent from the wicked. A night in the healing temple of Asclepius is proposed as the cure, and Poverty comes on to argue that a world in which the good are all rich is a world in which nobody works. The last surviving Aristophanes and the most read through the Middle Ages, with the political chorus nearly gone and personal invective replaced by allegory.
