The Pot of Gold
A poor old Athenian who has dug a pot of gold out from under his hearth can no longer eat, sleep or answer a neighbour without reading a plot to rob him into it, and he keeps shifting the hiding place. His daughter, whom the rich bachelor next door wants to marry without a dowry, is already pregnant by that man's nephew, and the wedding preparations put a crew of hired cooks in the house where the gold is buried. The last act is lost, but the miser invented here reached Molière's The Miser nearly intact and stands behind every stage skinflint since.
