Phormio

Terence · 161 BCE · Play · Roman · Classical

Two fathers sail off and leave their sons in Athens, where one marries a penniless orphan by way of a lawsuit staged for the purpose and the other borrows heavily for a music girl. The man who staged the suit is a parasite with nothing to lose and unfailing nerve, and he takes both problems in hand, chiefly by knowing a thing about one of the fathers that the father would rather his wife never heard. Adapted from Apollodorus of Carystus, and the play Molière later stripped for the tricks of Scapin.
