The Birdcage

A South Beach drag club owner is asked by his son to strip the apartment of everything queer for one evening and pretend to be a straight cultural attaché, because the girl's father chairs a morality committee and is fleeing a scandal. The club's star performer, who raised the boy, refuses to be sent away. Nichols and Elaine May built a mainstream studio farce around a gay household at a point when that was still unusual.
