Thesmophoriazusae

Aristophanes · 411 BCE · Play · Greek · Classical

Hearing that the women of Athens will vote at their own festival on how to punish him for the wives he puts on stage, Euripides fails to recruit a fellow poet to infiltrate the rite and sends an elderly kinsman in, shaved and dressed as a woman. The disguise holds for a while, and once it fails the two of them try to get out by acting rescue scenes from Euripides' own tragedies, one after another. The most thoroughly literary of the comedies, a parody that asks its audience to know the plays it is quoting almost line by line.
