Exemplary Novels
Twelve short fictions, running from a gypsy dancer in Madrid courted by a nobleman who must first serve two years among her people, to a pair of boy thieves apprenticed in a Seville courtyard where the criminals keep a rota, a chaplain and a set of accounts. A law graduate convinced he is made of glass goes about telling the truth to anyone who will carry him, and the last piece is a night's conversation between two dogs outside a hospital. Cervantes claimed in the prologue to be the first to write novelas in Castilian rather than translate them out of the Italian, and the claim mostly holds.
