The Trials of Persiles and Sigismunda

Cervantes · 1617 CE · Novel · Spanish · Renaissance

A prince and a princess of the far north travel as brother and sister out of barbarian islands and southward through shipwreck, captivity and false accusation, across Portugal, Spain and France toward Rome. Every stage brings a new company with its own interrupted story, and the two are parted and rejoined so often that the pattern becomes the argument. Cervantes signed the dedication four days before he died, believing this and not Don Quixote was the book that would compete with Heliodorus.
