Erec and Enide
A knight of Arthur's court wins a sparrowhawk contest and with it a poor vavasour's daughter, marries her, and then stops going out at all, until he overhears her weeping that the court says she has ruined him. He puts her on the road ahead of him and forbids her to speak, and she breaks the order at every ambush for the length of the poem. The first Arthurian romance in any language, and the one that set the pattern of adventures arranged to test a marriage rather than to win one.
