Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart

Chrétien de Troyes · c. 1180 CE · Poem · French · Medieval

The queen is led out of Arthur's court by a knight of the country from which no stranger returns, and a rider whose name is withheld for half the poem follows until his horse drops, then hesitates two steps before climbing into the cart that carries condemned men. Those two steps cost him more with her than crossing a bridge made from a sword edge does, and each humiliation is reported as a devotion. Chrétien says the plot and the meaning were given him by Marie de Champagne; this is where Lancelot and the queen first appear as lovers.
