The Three Musketeers
A Gascon boy of eighteen rides into Paris on a yellow horse with a letter of introduction and contrives to arrange three duels before his first afternoon is out. The men he has challenged become his friends, and the four are drawn into a quarrel between the queen, her English admirer and a cardinal who misses nothing. Dumas took the frame from Courtilz de Sandras's spurious memoirs of the real d'Artagnan and wrote with Auguste Maquet at his elbow.
