The restoration of Charles II, the fall of the superintendent Fouquet and the hardening of Louis XIV fill the years in which the four friends find themselves serving powers that no longer need them. Athos's son Raoul loves Louise de La Vallière, whom the king has noticed; Aramis, now a bishop, has learned something in the Bastille about the succession. Its closing section is the part usually printed alone as The Man in the Iron Mask.
