Edward II

Christopher Marlowe · c. 1592 CE · Play · English · Renaissance

A new king's first act is to call home the favourite his father banished, and the barons who forced that banishment will not have it a second time. Twenty years of English history are compressed into a quarrel over one man's place at court, with the queen and her lover slowly gathering the opposition. Marlowe cut Holinshed's chronicle hard and gave the deposition scenes a plainness that Shakespeare studied closely.
