Richard II
William Shakespeare · c. 1595 CE · Play · English · Renaissance
A king banishes two quarrelling lords, then seizes the estate of one to pay for an Irish war, which gives Bolingbroke his reason to come back with an army. Returning from Ireland, Richard finds his support gone and has to argue for a crown he believed was his by God's appointment. Majesty as poetry losing to power.
