The Taming of the Shrew
A wealthy Paduan will not let his younger daughter marry until someone takes the elder, Katherina, who has driven off every suitor. Petruchio comes from Verona for the dowry, marries her over her objections, and sets about breaking her by deprivation dressed as kindness. A forced wooing played as a war of wills; the obedience speech is still contested ground.
