Man and Superman

George Bernard Shaw · 1903 CE · Play · English · Modernist

John Tanner, author of a revolutionary handbook and a declared opponent of marriage, is made joint guardian of Ann Whitefield and takes a while to notice that she has selected him. He bolts for the Continent by motor car, is taken in the Sierra Nevada by brigands under an unemployed anarchist, and dreams a night-long debate in hell between Don Juan, the Devil and a commander's statue. Shaw built the dream act on Mozart's Don Giovanni to argue for a Life Force that uses lovers for its own ends.
