His Girl Friday
A star reporter tells her editor and ex-husband she is remarrying and moving to Albany, and he keeps her in the building by handing her one last story: a condemned man in the press-room cells the night before a politically useful hanging. Hawks rewrote the second lead as a woman and pushed the dialogue past two hundred words a minute. The contempt for newspapers survives the speed, and the pace has never been matched.
