The Beatification of Area Boy

A day on the pavement outside a Lagos shopping plaza, where a security guard with an abandoned degree quietly governs the hawkers, beggars and boys working the street, taking his cut and settling their disputes. A society wedding, a military clearance of a nearby slum and a soldier back from the north converge on the same stretch of concrete. Written in exile as the Abacha regime hunted its critics at home.
