A Dance of the Forests

Wole Soyinka · 1960 CE · Play · Nigerian · Contemporary

A community preparing its Gathering of the Tribes asks the forest for illustrious ancestors worth honouring, and gets two obscure dead with a grievance instead: a captain and his pregnant wife, killed eight centuries earlier by a court much like this one. Ogun and Eshuoro contend over the mortals while a half-child waits to be born. Written for Nigeria's independence and refusing to flatter the new nation.
