Twice-Told Tales
Sketches and tales gathered from the annuals Hawthorne had been publishing in anonymously for a decade, among them The Minister's Black Veil, Wakefield and The Maypole of Merry Mount. Puritan New England supplies most of the settings, and the recurring subject is a person who steps out of the common lot and cannot step back. The book that made Hawthorne's name, and on which Poe built his theory of the single-sitting tale.
