The Blithedale Romance

Nathaniel Hawthorne · 1852 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

Miles Coverdale, a minor Boston poet, joins a farming community founded to replace competition with brotherhood and watches his companions more than he pitches hay. Among them are a woman of means who writes on the rights of women, a philanthropist consumed by his plan for reforming criminals, and a frail girl the mesmerists want. Hawthorne drew it from his own months at Brook Farm: the least idealistic American book about idealism.
