A New England house raised on land taken from a man hanged as a wizard has been settling into decay for two centuries, and the last spinster of the family opens a cent-shop in its front room to keep herself. Her brother comes home after thirty years in prison, a young daguerreotypist lodges under the gables, and a rich judge cousin presses the household about something he believes is hidden in the walls. Hawthorne on inherited guilt, written directly after The Scarlet Letter and drawing on his own ancestor's part in the Salem witch trials.
