Go Down, Moses

William Faulkner · 1942 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist

Seven linked stories on the McCaslin land in Mississippi, where the white and black descendants of one slaveholder work out across a century what they owe each other. At the centre is Ike McCaslin, taught to hunt by Sam Fathers and taught to read the plantation ledgers by nobody, and the old bear the woods will not give up. The hunting is elegy: the big woods shrink measurably from one story to the next.
