Little House in the Big Woods

Laura Ingalls Wilder · 1932 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

A year turns around a log house in the Wisconsin woods, measured out in butchering time, maple sugaring, the smokehouse and the churn, with a five-year-old girl watching every step of the work. Winter nights her father takes down the fiddle and tells what happened to him among the trees, and her mother keeps the rag doll and the china shepherdess out of reach of the baby. Wilder began the sequence at sixty-five, setting down the household economy of the 1870s frontier in full detail.
