These Happy Golden Years

Laura Ingalls Wilder · 1943 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

At fifteen Laura takes a school twelve miles out on the prairie and boards with a couple whose wife keeps a knife under her pillow, teaching five pupils, two of them older than she is. Every Friday through the cold Almanzo Wilder drives out with a cutter and a pair of half-broken Morgans to fetch her home for the weekend, and will not say why he does it. Three more terms, a dressmaker's wage and a set of matched buggy horses fill out the last book of the sequence Wilder finished in her lifetime.
