The Heartless

Yi Kwang-su · 1917 CE · Novel · Korean · Modernist

An English teacher at a Seoul secondary school is engaged to the daughter of a wealthy Christian who will send him to study in America, and then the girl he was betrothed to as a child reappears, sold years ago into the kisaeng houses after her father's ruin. He owes one of them a future and the other a past, and cannot work out which claim is older. Serialised in a daily newspaper under Japanese rule, it is where the Korean novel stops being a tale and starts being a novel.
