This Earth of Mankind
Minke, the only Javanese boy at the elite Dutch school in Surabaya at the turn of the century, is taken out to a farm run by a concubine who was sold to a Dutchman at fourteen and then taught herself everything he knew. He falls in love with her daughter, and colonial law turns out to have firm views about who belongs to whom. Pramoedya composed the quartet aloud for fellow prisoners on Buru island, where inmates were forbidden writing materials.
