Weep Not, Child
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o · 1964 CE · Novel · East African · Contemporary
Njoroge is the first in his family sent to school, and he believes with total conviction that education will win back the ridges the settlers took from his father. The Emergency closes over the valley in strikes, oaths and detention camps, and every further year of schooling costs more than the last. The first novel in English by an East African, published while its author still wrote under the name James Ngugi.
