"Master Harold"...and the Boys
Athol Fugard · 1982 CE · Play · South African · Contemporary
A wet afternoon in a St George's Park tea room in Port Elizabeth, 1950, no customers: two black waiters practise for the ballroom championships while the owner's seventeen-year-old son does his homework and holds forth on men of magnitude. The older waiter, who built the boy a kite once and has stood in for the crippled father now coming home from hospital, lets him talk. Premiered at Yale because it could not open at home.
