To Kill a Mockingbird

Robert Mulligan · 1962 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

Scout and Jem Finch spend an Alabama summer daring each other toward the shuttered Radley place while their father, the town's lawyer, takes on the defense of Tom Robinson, a Black man accused of raping a white woman. The trial is watched from the balcony where the Black townspeople sit, and the children get their first measure of what their neighbors are prepared to believe. Horton Foote's screenplay narrows Harper Lee to a single child's line of sight, and Gregory Peck's Atticus fixed the character in American memory more firmly than the page had.
