Sanctuary
Temple Drake, a judge's daughter at the state university, goes off with a drunk student and their car puts them at a bootleggers' house in the country, where a small impotent gangster called Popeye watches her all night. A lawyer with more decency than sense takes the case of the man charged for what happens there. Faulkner said he wrote it for money in three weeks, then paid out of his own royalties to have it reset at galley stage because he could not let it stand.
