Absalom, Absalom!
In 1833 a man with no history and a band of wild slaves takes a hundred square miles of Mississippi bottomland and sets about founding a dynasty on it. Seventy years later Quentin Compson sits in a freezing Harvard room with his Canadian roommate, retelling what an old woman, his father and his grandfather each told him about Thomas Sutpen, and no two of the tellings agree. The title is David's cry over his son in the second book of Samuel.
