A Rose for Emily
Miss Emily Grierson dies at seventy-four in the last house left on what was once the best street in Jefferson, and the whole town comes to the funeral, the men out of respect and the women to see inside. The narrator is that town, telling her life badly out of order: the remitted taxes, the smell the aldermen sprinkled lime for, the Northern paving foreman she was seen driving with on Sundays. Faulkner's most anthologised story, and his first sale to a national magazine.
