Gargoyles

Thomas Bernhard · 1967 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

A country doctor takes his student son along on a day of calls through a Styrian valley — an innkeeper's wife beaten to death, an industrialist gone to seed among his sister's papers, a crippled child. The last patient is Prince Saurau, who talks without stopping from the ramparts of his castle at Hochgobernitz about his son in London, the ruin of the estate and the mental state of the state. The house call becomes the monologue.
