Old Masters

Thomas Bernhard · 1985 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

For thirty-six years Reger, an old music critic writing for an English paper, has sat every other morning on the same settee in the Bordone Room of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, facing Tintoretto's portrait of a white-bearded man. Atzbacher, who has arrived an hour early to watch him through a doorway, relays his demolition of Stifter, Heidegger, Austria and the old masters themselves. The comedy of total denunciation at its most sustained.
