Woodcutters
Sunk in a wing chair in the hallway of the Auersbergers' Vienna flat, the narrator waits with the other guests at an artistic dinner for the Burgtheater actor who is late because he is still on stage as old Ekdal in Ibsen's The Wild Duck. The party has been convened for the evening of an old friend's funeral. For some hours he annihilates, silently and without moving, every person in the room and himself along with them.
