The Wild Duck

Henrik Ibsen · 1884 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

The son of a rich merchant comes home determined to tell his old schoolfriend the truth about the marriage, the photography business and the household his father quietly arranged for him. In the attic above the studio the family keeps a make-believe forest and a wounded wild duck, tended by the friend's fourteen-year-old daughter. The play turns against its own truth-teller, the idealist type Ibsen had written straight a decade earlier, and stands as the hinge between the social plays and the last work.
