Washington Square

Henry James · 1880 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

Catherine Sloper is a plain, dutiful girl with a large inheritance coming and a physician father whose affection stops at irony, so when a handsome young man of no profession begins to call, the doctor is certain what he is after. The courtship proceeds under a threat to disinherit her and is egged on by a romantic aunt who loves an intrigue. James thought little of the book afterwards; it is the most economical thing he wrote.
