The Gilded Six-Bits
Every Saturday Joe Banks throws nine silver dollars through the door for his wife Missie May to scramble after before he will come in and eat. A stranger called Otis D. Slemmons opens an ice cream parlor in the Florida town wearing a gold piece on his watch chain and another in his mouth, and Joe is proud to take his wife along to look at him. Published in Story magazine in 1933, it brought Hurston her first book contract.
