Sweat

Zora Neale Hurston · 1926 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist

Delia Jones has washed white people's clothes in Eatonville for fifteen years, and her husband Sykes despises the work that pays for the house they both live in. He keeps a woman in town, and when the whip he throws at her stops frightening Delia he brings home a caged rattlesnake and sets it by the kitchen door. Hurston gave it to the one-issue Harlem magazine Fire!!, and it was the first of her fiction to be widely anthologized.
