Amelia
A half-pay officer is committed to Newgate by a justice who did not trouble to hear him, and his wife follows him out into a London of sponging-houses, masquerades and friends who all want something from her. Booth cannot stop gambling and cannot quite stop lying, and her steadiness is the only capital the household has. Fielding took the Aeneid for his model and thought this his best book; the reviewers disagreed loudly enough that he never wrote another.
