Shamela

Henry Fielding · 1741 CE · Novel · English · Enlightenment

The waiting-maid's story retold from inside her own calculation: the virtue is a tactic, the fainting fits are timed, and the letters go home to a mother who worked the same trade before her. Parson Williams is in the bedroom before the squire manages it, and the whole is framed as a correspondence between two clergymen recommending the book to the trade. Published anonymously within four months of Richardson's, it is the shortest and least forgiving thing in English eighteenth-century satire.
