Joseph Andrews
A footman in a London household refuses the widow who employs him, is turned out for it, and walks back into the country to find Fanny, falling in on the road with a penniless curate who carries three volumes of Aeschylus and no money for the inn. The road supplies robbers, magistrates, innkeepers and a coachful of passengers debating whether to help a naked man in a ditch. What starts as another swipe at Richardson's maid turns, somewhere in the first hundred pages, into the first English comic novel written on purpose.
