Nicholas Nickleby
A young man left penniless by his father's death is packed off by his uncle to teach at a Yorkshire boarding school where unwanted boys are starved, beaten and half-blinded by the proprietor. He thrashes the schoolmaster and takes to the road with Smike, the school's broken drudge, falling in among strolling players while the uncle goes to work on his sister in London. Published in monthly numbers from 1838, its attack on the Yorkshire schools was direct enough to close several of them.
