A Tale of Two Cities

Charles Dickens · 1859 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A doctor let out of eighteen years in the Bastille can barely say his own name, and the daughter who did not know he was alive takes him to London to be nursed back into a life he has forgotten. Years later her husband, a French aristocrat who renounced the title and the estate, is called back to Paris by a letter from an old servant and arrested by a Republic already filling the tumbrils, while in a wine shop a woman knits the names of the condemned into her register. Written weekly to launch All the Year Round and worked up out of Carlyle's history of the Revolution, it is the most tightly plotted and least comic thing Dickens wrote.
