Dombey and Son

Charles Dickens · 1848 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

A City merchant who values his firm above every person in it waits for the son who will carry the name into the next generation, and cannot see the daughter standing in front of him. The frail boy is sent early to a school that crams pupils like hothouse fruit, while outside the new railway cuts the old neighbourhood to pieces and the manager of the firm smiles at everyone. The first novel Dickens worked out in advance from a written scheme, and the one that moved his social range from the streets to the counting house.
